An English kindergarten in southern Seoul, has been suspended from running their educational business after it had allegedly fed rotten food to children, causing them to suffer from stomachaches, vomiting and rashes for months.
EWAS specialized in English education for young children and charged about 2 million won ($1,733) a month in tuition per child.
The Seoul education authorities confiscated the rotten food that had been stored in freezers at the institute. The shelf life of some packs of bacon had expired more than seven years ago.
“We will suspend the business and take punitive action after investigating further,” said Kim Sang-yeol, an official from Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
The Seoul education office also requested the health authorities to conduct an epidemiological investigation after collecting stool samples from the 33 children.
One parent said that her child had complained of abdominal pains for months. “I was horrified to find out that the refrigerator was full of food that had gone bad,” she said.
Another mother said that her child was suffering from stomachache and a rash, but in the beginning, she thought that the child was pretending to be ill due to stress because of studying in English.
