South Korea’s footballers triumphed against China 3-0, Monday — in their quest for gold for the first time in 24 years — in the round of 16 in the Asian Games.
Kim Jung-woo — the oldest footballer in the squad — hit the first goal in the 20th minute. Park Chu-young of AS Monaco and Cho young-cheol of Albirex Nigata scored the second and third, respectively.
Following the victory South Korea will face Uzbekistan for a place in the top four at Tianhe Stadium, Friday.
The first goal game came after a rushing Cho met a cross from the left and promptly returned the ball into the center where Kim connected and put it into the net.
Five minutes into the second half, Park proved his prowess with a free-kick in front of the penalty area. The 25-year-old’s shot went over the wall and hit the far right of goal passing the outstretched arms of the Chinese goalie.
Eight minutes later, a through pass from Koo Ja-cheol found Ji Dong-won. Ji fell but only after making a cross that reached Cho, who sealed the win with the third goal of the game.
