Rice prices began to rise suddenly as production decreased sharply due to floods, the report said. Moreover, there has been no food aid from foreign countries since the North’s shelling of South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island near the western sea border last November, it said.
A source was quoted as having told the broadcaster that as the rice price has soared, the number of people who sell anything they have to buy the staple grain is increasing.
Some people, apparently referring to the food shortage facing the North, said, “Businesses go well only when businessmen meet good luck. Kim Jong-un perhaps seems to be unlucky. We, who are innocent, are suffering punishment from heaven because of the unrighteous Kim Jong-il and his heir Kim Jong-un,” according to the broadcast.
北 쌀값 두배로 뛰어… 김정일 부자 원망
1월 들어 북한에서 쌀값이 1200원에서 2500원으로 올랐고 강냉이도 400원에서 1000원까지 뛰어올랐다고 양강도 혜산의 소식통을 인용해 열린북한방송이 19일 보도했다.
북한에서는 홍수로 쌀생산량이 크게 감소했고, 연평도 사건 이후로 외부에서 지원되는 쌀도 없는 상황에서 돈이 있는 사람들이 쌀을 사들이기 시작해 1월부터 갑자기 쌀 가격이 폭등했다고 이 보도는 전했다.
한 소식통은 "1월 들어서 천정부지로 솟구치는 쌀값을 감당할 수 없어 집의 생활가재들을 모조리 팔아서라도 식량을 확보하는 주민들이 계속 늘어나고 있다"고 전했다는 것.
최근 발생한 심각한 식량난에 대해 일부 주민들 사이에서 "장사도 복이 따라줘야 잘 된다고 하는데 김정은은 아마도 복이 따르지 않는 인물인 것 같다. 아무 죄도 없는 우리가 죄 많은 김정일 부자 때문에 하늘에서 내리는 벌을 치르고 있다"는 불만을 토로하고 있다고 알려졌다.
