When Kim Ga-in, a Seoul resident, climbed a mountain on Sunday, the 27-year-old woman did not wear hiking pants or shorts or other traditional trekking clothes. Instead, she went with a more comfortable option that would have been unheard of among hikers a generation ago: leggings.

서울에 거주하는 김가인(27) 씨는 산에 오를 때 등산바지나 반바지 등 전통적인 트레킹 옷을 입지 않았다. 대신, 그녀는 한 세대 전 등산객들 사이에서는 볼 수 없었던 조금 더 편안한 옵션인 레깅스를 입었다.


Her sister, Do-hee, 20, who came along to Mount Inwang in northern Seoul, also chose to wear leggings instead of regular trousers as leggings are flexible and allow her a full range of movement.

서울 북부의 인왕산에 함께 온 그녀의 여동생 도희(20) 씨도 레깅스가 신축성이 좋고 활동성이 높아 일반 바지 대신 레깅스를 입었다.


"I came across leggings three to four years ago when I took yoga classes. I initially wore leggings only for yoga but last year began to wear the super-flexible yoga pants during my daily life and outdoor activities," Ga-in said while walking down the mountain.

"3~4년 전 요가 수업을 들으며 레깅스를 우연히 발견했다. 처음에는 요가를할 때만 입었지만, 작년부터 레깅스를 일상생활과 야외활동에도 입기 시작했다"고 가인 씨는 산에서 내려오며 말했다.


Leggings have transitioned into an everyday wardrobe staple, from athletic attire worn by gym goers. For younger people, the preference is related to comfort. They also want to flaunt their body shape.

레깅스는 헬스장에 다니는 사람들이 입는 운동복에서 일상복으로 변신했다. 젊은 층의 경우, 이러한 선호도는 편안함과 관련이 있다. 그들은 또한 그들의 몸매를 과시하고 싶어한다.


Leggings are not just preferred by women. An increasing number of men also find leggings to be affordable and comfortable.

레깅스는 여성들만이 선호하는 것이 아니다. 레깅스가 저렴하고 편안하다는 남성들도 늘고 있다.


Reflecting the growing appetite for comfort, sales of leggings at online shopping malls jumped sharply this year. Auction saw sales of men's leggings and sales of women's leggings jump 342 percent and 310 percent, respectively, from Jan. 1 to June 15 compared to the same period of last year. Sales of men's leggings at Gmarket rose 142 percent and sales of women's leggings grew 191 percent during the same period.

편안함에 대한 욕구가 커진 것을 반영하듯 올해 들어 온라인 쇼핑몰의 레깅스 매출이 크게 뛰었다. 실제로 옥션에서 1월 1일부터 6월 15일까지 남성용 레깅스 판매와 여성용 레깅스 판매량이 지난해 같은 기간에 비해 각각 342%, 310% 급증했다. 같은 기간 G마켓 남성용 레깅스 매출은 142%, 여성용 레깅스 매출은 191% 늘었다.


"Consumers purchased more leggings from online malls for mountain climbing and camping trips as the government recommends social distancing after the coronavirus outbreak," an eBay Korea spokesman said over the phone.

이베이코리아 대변인은 전화상으로 "코로나바이러스의 발병 이후 정부가 사회적 거리 두기를 권고함에 따라 소비자들이 등산이나 캠핑을 위해 온라인몰에서 레깅스를 더 많이 구입했다"고 말했다.


For people in their 20s and 30s, who largely reject uniformity, leggings are simply a basic, the equivalent of jeans, he said.

그는 "일률성을 크게 거부하는 20~30대에게 레깅스는 청바지에 버금가는 기본에 불과하다"고 말했다.


The country's athleisure market is expected to reach 3 trillion won in 2020 from 500 billion won in 2009, according to the Korea Research Institute for Fashion Industry (KRIFI). (Yonhap)

한국패션산업연구원에 따르면 국내 애슬레저 시장은 2009년 5천억원에서 2020년 3조원에 이를 전망이다.
