More than one in 10 new coronavirus cases reported in South Korea over the past two weeks were foreigners living in the country, health authorities here said Thursday.
질병관리청 중앙방역대책본부는 지난 2주간 국내 신규 코로나 바이러스 확진자 10명 중 1명 이상이 국내 체류 외국인이라고 목요일 밝혔다.
A total of 1,379 foreign residents living in the country were confirmed to be infected with the COVID-19 virus between Aug. 1 and Saturday, accounting for 11.1 percent of the total number of new cases, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
질병관리청에 따르면, 8월 1일부터 지난 토요일(14일) 사이 국내에 체류하는 코로나19 외국인 확진자 수는 총 1천379명으로 전체 신규확진자 수의 11.1%를 차지했다.
The rate is much higher than the percent of foreigners living in the country, which comes to 3.8 percent, the authorities said.
질병관리청은 국내에 거주하는 외국인 비율인 3.8%보다 훨씬 높은 수준이라고 말했다.
The portion has been on the steady rise since 7.7 percent in early May, and 8.8 percent in early July.
이는 5월 초 7.7%, 7월 초 8.8% 이후 꾸준히 증가하고 있다.
Of the total, 959 were from the wider capital area ― Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province ― and 420 were from the other parts of the country, the KDCA said.
질병관리청은 이 중 서울, 인천, 경기도 등 수도권에서 959명, 비수도권에서는 420명의 확진자가 나왔다고 말했다.
The KDCA said most of them were in their 20s or 30s and from Asian countries, including Vietnam, China, Uzbekistan and Thailand.
질병관리청은 주로 베트남, 중국, 우즈베키스탄, 태국 등 아시아 국가 출신의 2~30대 젊은 층이 확진됐다고 말했다.
The number of cluster infections linked to foreign residents also sharply increased from just two in June to 42 in July and 22 in August, the KDCA said.
외국인 관련 집단감염 발생 사례도 지난 6월 2건뿐이었으나 7월 42건, 8월 22건으로 급증했다고 질병관리청은 밝혔다.
On Thursday, the country added 2,152 more COVID-19 cases, topping 2,100. It is the second-largest number recorded here during the COVID-19 outbreak, following an extended weekend. (Yonhap)
지난 목요일 신규확진자 2천152명을 기록하며 2천100명을 넘어섰다. 이는 (대체공휴일로) 늘어난 연휴에 이어 두 번째로 큰 규모이다.
