Korean Beauty Named Miss World Asia-Pacific

Miss Korea Kim Joo-ri won the Asia-Pacific Continental Queen of Beauty award at the Miss World pageant held Saturday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The 21-year-old was among the 16 contestants ― from a total of 112 international contestants ― to make the semifinals, as a representative of the Asia-Pacific region. But Kim did not make the list of seven finalists.

Kaiane Aldorino from Gibraltar, 23, was named the new Miss World while Miss Mexico, Perla Beltran Acosta, 23, was the first runner-up. The second runner-up was Miss South Africa, Tatum Keshwar, 25.

An aspiring diplomat, Kim is a multilingual ballerina who specialized in Korean traditional dance at Sunhwa Arts School, Seoul, and ballet at Russia's Bolshoi Ballet School.

She was specially requested by the Miss World organizing committee to perform a traditional Korean dance sequence to ``Arirang,'' a popular folk song, during the course of the two-hour-long competition. The event, which opened in the South African city ahead of the 2010 World Cup, was broadcast live by the United States' E!TV, China's CCTV-2 and Russia's CTV, among other networks, to some 1 billion viewers worldwide.

``It's a pity that I didn't enter the final round but it was a meaningful experience that enabled me to share the beauty of Korean women with the rest of the world,'' Kim was quoted as saying by Hankook Ilbo, the sister paper of The Korea Times and organizer of the Miss Korea pageant. Kim will vie for the Miss Universe title next year.

Meanwhile, Korea will be host to the 2010 Mister World Contest, which is held biannually by the Miss World Organization. The event will bring together some 80 contestants in March in Incheon.

김주리 미스월드 아시아 태평양 지역상 수상

미스코리아 진 김주리양이 12일 토요일 남아프리카공화국 요하네스버그에서 열린 2009년 미스월드대회에서 아시아태평양지역상을 수상했다.

김양921)은 이날 112개국 후보가 참가한 가운데 열린 미스월드대회에서 아시아태평양지역 대표로 준결승인 톱16 진입에 성공했으나 최종 7명을 선발하는 본선 진출에는 아쉽게 실패했다.

올해 미스월드는 지브롤타의 칼라네 알도리노(23)양이 수상했으며 2위는 멕시코의 페를라 벨트란(23)양이 선정됐다. 3위는 주최국인 남아공의 타투른 케시와르(25)양에게 돌아갔다.

외교관을 꿈꾸는 김양은 서울 선화예술학교에서 한국 전통무용을 러시라 볼쇼이 발레학교에서 발레를 전공한 다언어를 구사하는 발레리나이다.

이날 2시간에 걸쳐 진행된 대회 중 조직위의 특별요청에 따라 아리랑에 맞춰 고전무용을 선보였다. 2010 남아공 월드컵 개최에 맞춰 이곳에서 열린 미스월드 대회는 미국의 E!TV, 중국의 CCTV-2, 러시아의 CTV 등으로 전세계 약 10억 명에 생중계됐다.

김양은 "최종 라운드에 들지 못한 데 대해 유감스럽다"면서 " 그러나 다른 나라 미인들과 한국여성의 미를 공유하게끔 해준 의미있는 경험이었다"고 말했다. 김양은 내년 미스유니버스 대회에 참가할 계획이다.

한편 한국은 미스월드조직위가 2년 마다 여는 2010 미스터 월드 선발대회를 주최할 예정이다. 이 대회는 인천에서 내년 3월 약 80명의 선수를 불러들일 계획이다.
