Busan Transportation Corporation (BTC) wants to give a national bravery award to five civilians who stayed at the scene of a subway fire to put out the flames, preventing a much worse tragedy. The problem is that the BTC does not know who the people are or where to find them.
The fire broke out on July 17 at City Hall station in Busan, injuring five people and forcing the evacuation of 400. According to metro officials and closed-circuit television footage, the fire started in the air-conditioning system. As others evacuated, some men found a fire extinguisher and stayed to put out the flames.
Their quick action saved hundreds of lives, BTC officials believe. BTC says it wants to offer the men a free pass for one year.
