More than 5,000 students dropped out of school last year at primary and secondary schools in Seoul mainly due to maladjustment or family issues, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) said Tuesday.
The number of students who dropped out of school stood at 5,454, down from 6,391 in 2012. Those who quit school due to illness, accidents or studying abroad were not included in the figure.
By level, the dropout number fell from 4,643 to 4,025 at high schools, 1,406 to 1,168 at middle schools, and 342 to 81 at elementary schools.
SMOE said the number of dropouts has decreased since it began running a pilot "reconsideration period" program for students last June. During the period, students were given counseling.
Among 996 students who went on the program last year, 290, or 29.1 percent opted not to quit.
SMOE has extended the consideration period from 15 to up to 21 days and also expanded the target students to primary and middle schools from high schools since the beginning of the year.
