Three conscripted police officers are being investigated for allegedly selling an electric air purifier installed in their dormitory to make money for a party, police said Monday.
According to Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, the members of the Korea National Police Agency Auxiliary Police are suspected of stealing the appliance installed in their shared living quarters. The suspects were serving as auxiliary police as an alternative to mandatory military duty.
The suspects allegedly sold the device for 500,000 won ($446) on Saturday after posting an ad on an online second-hand market. They said they needed money "to have a party" before being transferred to a riot control squad.
"The air purifier was a donation from our agency's local partner group," a police officer was quoted as saying by News 1. "We are looking into the case to decide whether to seek prosecution."
