One Russian and two Korean-Chinese were among those unaccounted for after the Sewol ferry sank off the county's southwestern coast, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters said Thursday.
A total of five foreign passengers ― two Korean-Chinese, two Filipinos and one Russian ― were on board, but the Filipinos were rescued Wednesday morning, the Ministry of Security and Public Administration said.
The two missing Korean-Chinese, Han Geum-hee, 37, and Lee Do-nam, 38, are a married couple, according to the Chinese Embassy in Korea.
The Russian, Serkov Vyacheslav Nikoayevich, 17, is a student at Ansan Danwon High School, Gyeonggi Province, on a four-day field trip with his schoolmates to Jeju Island.
The Russian Embassy in Seoul expressed deep worries over the incident.
The embassy told The Korea Times that it has contacted family members of Serkov.
"His family is agonizing over the incident. We've been closely watching the rescue operations," said a public affairs officer.
The Voice of Russia reported news of the missing Russian citizen, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry. "The Russian embassy in Seoul is working in close contact with rescue services, police and Serkov's family," it reported.
The two from the Philippines, Cabras, 40, and Manio, 45, were crewmembers working as entertainers on the boat. The two were being treated at hospitals, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure.
A total of 475 passengers and crewmembers were on board, including 325 students and 15 teachers from the school. The Coast Guard said 179 passengers were rescued as of late Thursday afternoon. Nine were killed and 287 are still missing.
