Noh Kwang-il, 55, was appointed Tuesday as the new spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
The career diplomat joined the foreign ministry in 1981 after passing the foerign service examination.
Since then, he has held various posts at the government agency.
Noh served as ambassador to New Zealand from 2009 to 2011, and previously worked as director-general of the ministry headquarters' policy planning bureau.
After serving as ambassador, he was appointed as foreign policy advisor to the prime minister.
He was also an assistant secretary at Cheong Wa Dae in 2006 under the Roh Moo-hyun administration.
Noh graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in international relations, and earned a master's degree in the same subject at Cambridge University.
He is married with a son and daughter.
Noh will replace Cho Tai-young after MOFA appointed him as the new ambassador to Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the ministry also designated Shin Bong-kil, 59, former secretary-general of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat among Korea, China and Japan, as president of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security affiliated with the Korea National Diplomatic Academy under MOFA.
Also a graduate of Seoul National University with an international relations degree, Shin formerly served as ambassador to Jordan.
