Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will host a fundraising concert at Ewha Womans University, Aug. 18, under the title of the “Concert of Hopes & Dreams.”
The event will feature a collection of arias from two Verdi operas, “La Traviata” and “Rigoletto,” under the baton of the city-run orchestra’s artistic director and conductor Chung Myung-whun.
“Tiny dynamo” Kathleen Kim, a Korean-American coloratura soprano and the leading singer at the New York Metropolitan Opera, will make her debut in Korea at the concert. Two other world class vocalists, tenor Alfred Kim, 37, now active in Germany and young baritone Kim Joo-taek, 24, will join the concert to be staged at the Grand Hall of the university at 6 p.m.
Tickets cost 10,000 won for S seats and 20,000 won for R seats.
"Never underestimate the power of music. Great music goes beyond barriers to bring people together" said conductor Chung.
A city spokesman said that the concert is the fourth of its kind since its inception last year aimed at giving substantial aid to society.
“All the proceeds from sales of tickets and programs will be donated to the Korean Red Cross for welfare and relief activities, as the title of the concert indicates,” he said. “Ticket prices are also relatively cheap for everyone to easily afford the event.”
The orchestra contributed an estimated 100 million won raised from the three similar concerts held last year to the Seoul Welfare Foundation, ChildFund Korea and Korea Student Aid Foundation.
