Residents of Kafranbel, Syria, have released a poignant tribute to late comedian and actor Robin Williams as they attempt to draw international attention to the ongoing bloodshed in the crisis-hit country, news website Vox reports.
People at the town in northwestern Syria have been releasing photos of handmade signs on social media every Friday to highlight the plight of those trapped in the conflict.
Their latest banner quotes Williams' famous line from the Disney animation, Aladdin, where he played a silly, fast-talking Genie who shoots out of a magic lamp, a role many consider as his definitive work in film.
"To be free. Such a thing would be greater than all the magic and all the treasures in the world," reads the banner, which finishes with "RIP Robin Williams."
Kafranbel activist Raed Fares told the New York Times earlier this year their signs are designed to reach an international audience.
People in Kafranbel are heavily critical of the U.S. President Barack Obama, whose government has avoided intervening in the Syrian crisis.
Previous signs have included: "Who wants to protect the war criminal Assad and ignore his crimes against humanity? Do you, President Obama?"
