Russian scientists have re-established contact with a satellite carrying geckos being tested for the effects of microgravity on sex.

Roscosmos space agency lost contact last week, just days after the launch, and could not send commands.

"The link is established, the prescribed commands have been conducted in accordance with the plan," Roscosmos chief official Oleg Nikolayevich Ostapenko told the Independent.

The Foton-M4 spacecraft was launched from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome on July 19 and made several orbits before it stopped responding.

There are five geckos on board, four females and a male.
