A Los Angeles pine tree planted in honor of the late George Harrison, a former member of The Beatles, has been killed by, well, a beetle infestation.
The tree, planted in Griffith Park in 2004, three years after Harrison's death, finally succumbed to the onslaught of bark beetles, ladybug beetles and other "tree-unfriendly creatures," the Los Angeles Times reported.
Los Angeles councilman Tom LaBonge told the newspaper the tree would be replanted.
The tree had grown to more than three meters before its beetle battle began. A plaque at the base reads, "In memory of a great humanitarian who touched the world as an artist, a musician and a gardener."
It concludes with a quote from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who Harrison followed, reading: "For the forest to be green each tree must be green."
"Yes, the George Harrison Tree was killed by beetles. Except for the loss of tree life, Harrison likely would have been amused at the irony," the Los Angeles Times quipped.
Harrison once said his biggest break in life was getting into the Beatles. His second biggest was getting out.
Harrison died at a friend's home in Los Angeles in 2001 after combating throat and lung cancer and a brain tumor.
