British actress Emma Watson is the new Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, the organization dedicated to gender equality.
"Women's rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can't imagine an opportunity more exciting," Watson said.
The star of many movies, including the Harry Potter series, will first work on the women's empowerment campaign, HeForShe.
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN undersecretary-general and executive director of UN Women, said Watson was ideally suited for her UN role, citing the star's experience promoting girls' education in countries such as Bangladesh and Zambia.
