Korea to invest 42 billion won in illegal drone response tech by 2025

South Korea said Sunday it will spend 42 billion won (US$37.6 million) by 2025 to develop a response system against illegal drones amid growing security threats from the fast-developing technology.
한국은 빠른 속도로 발전하고 있는 드론 기술로 인한 보안 위협이 증가하고 있는 가운데 2025년까지 420억 원을 들여 불법 드론에 대한 대응 시스템을 개발하겠다고 일요일 밝혔다.
A consortium of 23 companies and research institutes — which includes the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and aerospace and defense firm LIG Nex1 Co. — will develop a response system that spots and neutralizes the illegal unmanned aircraft, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT.
과학기술정보통신부에 따르면, 한국원자력연구원, 한국항공우주연구원, 항공우주 및 방산업체 LIG넥스원 등 23개 기업과 연구기관으로 구성된 컨소시엄이 불법 드론를 적발해 무력화하는 대응체계를 개발할 예정이다.
The ministry said such drones pose security threats to major public infrastructure and facilities, such as airports and nuclear power plants, given recent advances in technologies, such as artificial intelligence and robotics.
과기정통부는 이러한 드론이 최근 인공지능과 로봇기술 등의 발달로 인해 공항과 원자력 발전소 같은 주요 공공 인프라와 시설에 보안 위협을 가하고 있다고 말했다.
The ministry said current response systems against illegal drones are ground-based technologies and that the consortium will develop an aerial system by developing patrol drones that can detect illegal counterparts and neutralize them by either physical means, such as firing a net, or by hijacking its control system.
과기정통부는 현재 불법 드론에 대한 대응 시스템은 지상 기술이며, 컨소시엄은 불법 드론을 탐지해 그물을 발사하는 등의 물리적인 수단이나 관제 시스템을 탈취해 무력화할 수 있는 드론을 개발해 공중 대응 시스템을 만들 것이라고 설명했다.
The ministry said it will work with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the National Police Agency for the project, with 6.6 billion won set aside for this year.
과기정통부는 올해 66억원이 책정된 이 사업을 위해 산업통상자원부 및 경찰청과 협력할 것이라고 밝혔다.
Fears about potential unmanned attacks have lingered for years in South Korea since South Korean military authorities discovered crashed North Korean drones in border areas, including the front-line island of Baengnyeong in 2014.
