Super Junior's Kangin fined for drunk driving

K-pop group Super Junior member Kangin was sentenced to a 7 million won ($6,420) fine for drunk driving, Wednesday.

"The defendant was previously fined for the same offense and once again caused an accident and fled. So it appears that he deserves severe punishment," the Seoul Central District Court said.

"However, the accident did not cause any casualties, only property damage, and the defendant appears to be repenting his wrongdoing," they said.

On May 24, Kangin drove into a streetlight around 2 a.m. in front of a convenience store in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul, after drinking, and fled the scene.

He turned himself in at Gangnam Police Station about 11 hours later, and police presumed Kangin's blood alcohol content at the time of the accident was 0.157 percent, which qualifies for cancellation of a driver's license.

Police sent the case of drunk driving to the prosecution, June 10.

This was the second time that the boy band member has been caught driving drunk. In October 2009, he drove his car into a taxi and fled, but turned himself in after six hours. His driver's license was suspended and he was fined 8 million won.

Soon after the first accident, Kangin enlisted in the army and was discharged in 2012. Since then he's been trying to make a comeback in the entertainment business.
