South Korea deported two Japanese military attaches last month for their alleged illegal collection of confidential documents about North Korea.
The attaches obtained 74 classified papers produced by the Korea Defense Intelligence Command (KDIC) between 2013 and 2017 from a former KDIC official and a North Korean defector, the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing investigators. The two informants were paid 23.2 million won ($19,600) for the intelligence, the newspaper said.
The two Koreans were charged with breaking the National Security Act and received suspended jail terms in the first trial. They have appealed.
According to ruling statements, the leaked documents include second-class secrets titled "Locations of missile facilities in North Hampyeong Province and their storage capacities," "Overseas employment of North Korean missile engineers," "North Korea's development of submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles," and "Trend of sanctioned products being smuggled into North Korea."
