Storyteller Kim Seung-ah |
Korean cultural performer Kim Seung-ah, a pioneer who introduced storytelling as an art form in Korea, brings her K-Storytelling World Tour to Art Space Banjul on Jan. 11.
Titled "Happy New Year" the evening also features international performers Elaine and Mauny Muray.
Inspired by the folktales her grandmother told her as a child, Kim tells Korean folk stories in a dynamic and interactive way that engages audiences of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities.
Since 2007 Kim has performed Korean stories and given workshops about Korean culture and the art of storytelling, such as the narrative musical genre of pansori.
Her current world tour has included Scotland, England, the U.S., Taiwan, India and Indonesia.
"As a pioneer Korean professional storyteller, I have traveled across all the continents to bring Korea to the world through my stories and tales, and I have developed K-Storytelling as a new facet of Korea's nation branding," Kim said.
The current world tour includes performances at concert venues, art spaces and schools.
"This world tour will include various performances, workshops, and events focused on Korea, its culture and its people, extraordinary and ordinary heroes," said Kim.
"To make my dream true, I am relying on a committed project team in Korea and many local partners across the world."
Based on her experience, skills and passion, she has embarked on her one-year world tour with three main objectives: "to share Korean culture with a wide global audience, raise interest in Korea as a tourism destination and build an international network of storytellers willing to share their stories in Korea."
The show costs 20,000 won and includes a free drink and a raffle ticket for a lucky draw at the end of the night.
The performance is from 7 to 9 p.m. at Art Space Banjul. The venue is nearest to exit 12 of Jonggak Station on Line 1.
