South Korea will further ease restrictions on greenbelt zones to revitalize the struggling regional economies and provide more homes for low-income earners.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said Tuesday it will steadily ease restrictions on relatively unworthy properties in the areas by 2020 for further housing development.

Under the latest measure, a maximum of 308 square kilometers of land in a greenbelt zone will be permitted for constructing residences and buildings.

"Industrial facilities won't be allowed inside the area," a ministry spokesman said, adding that the construction of government complexes in the area would also be impossible.
