The Asia Journalist Association (AJA) Wednesday said it fully supports the re-election of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The association lauded his efforts in relation to the relief of major disasters like the Myanmar Cyclone in 2008, the Haiti earthquake and Pakistan floods in 2010, and raising the priority of climate change on the international agenda.
“We support the Secretary-General’s will to make ‘a stronger United Nations for a better world,’” AJA said in a statement.
It called on him to spare no efforts to realize universal values including world peace, human rights, and democracy.
“As he did during the past four and a half years, we wish that he visits disputed regions more often. We also expect him to pay more attention to those who are suffering from poverty, famine, health problems and other difficulties and make an effort to realize the world welfare,” AJA said.
Ban took a strong stance on Darfur to allow peacekeeping troops to enter Sudan, and cited the need to deal with global warming as an urgent issue.
Ban succeeded Kofi Annan of Kenya as the eighth secretary-general of the U.N. Ban is a former foreign minister of Korea serving for two years from 2004 to 2006.
