Grab-and-go breakfasts sell well

Food makers are vying to attract consumers with new breakfast dishes.

According to industry sources, the number of people taking grab-and-go packaged breakfast has increased due to their hectic lifestyle as well as a growing proportion of single households.

The proportion has increased about 6 percentage points every year since 2000, reaching 23.9 percent last year, according to Statistics Korea.

"More people are paying attention to their health and have started to get into the habit of eating breakfast," a CU spokesman said. "Of our customers who eat breakfast, almost a third are in their 20s, indicating that students and office workers have breakfast at a nearby store on the way to school and work."

CU, the biggest convenience store chain, saw sales of breakfast dishes between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. rise 36 percent over the past two months from a year earlier.

These include sandwiches, dried seaweed rolls, milk and bakery products.

In 2012, sales in the morning time-slot made up 19.4 percent of total sales. Last year, they jumped 5.3 percent.

"The ready-meal food market is worth up to 1 trillion won. So we are focusing on developing high-quality products at reasonable prices," the spokesman said.

The company has launched an event "Have breakfast at CU," which offers up to a 37 percent discount on 25 products including muffins and coffee. Last month it introduced rice porridge in collaboration with Bonjuk, a leading rice porridge franchise.

Convenience store chain 7-Eleven, last month, rolled out customizable breakfast dishes, which include olives, ham, eggs and a muffin, bacon and cheese bagels and cranberry chicken salad pasta.

McDonald's, the world's largest fast food chain, is hosting a "National Breakfast Day" event today. Between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., its stores will give away 1,000 free McMuffin sandwiches to anyone who makes a purchase between those hours.

Lotteria, a local burger franchise, has also launched an event that gives away free Americano and soft corn ice cream for those purchasing breakfast or lunch sets.


편의점 업계 아침식사 메뉴 이벤트 풍성

아침 간편식 시장을 둘러싼 업계의 경쟁이 가열되고 있다.  

일찌감치 아침 간편식 시장에 진출한 편의점 업체들이 점유율 확대를 위해 혈투를 벌이는 가운데 패스트푸드 업체 등도 신메뉴를 무기로 대대적인 공략에 나서면서 앞을 내다보기 힘든 혼전을 예고하고 있다.

8일 편의점 업계 등에 따르면 1, 2인 가구 증가, 바쁜 생활 패턴 등의 영향으로 간편하고 맛있게 먹을 수 있는 아침 먹거리를 찾는 고객이 늘고 있다.

씨유(CU)의 경우 지난 1~2월 아침 시간대(6~10시) 샌드위치, 제빵, 김밥, 우유의 매출은 전년 동기 대비 최대 36%나 증가했다. 종류별로는 샌드위치 30~36%, 제빵 18~23%, 김밥 5~8%, 우유 12~33%였다.

아침 시간대 매출에서 간편식이 차지하는 비중도 2012년 19.4%, 2013년 21.5%, 2014년 24.7% 등으로 매년 늘고 있다.

세븐일레븐도 아침 시간대(6~10시) 삼각김밥의 매출 비중이 2013년 21.7%에서 지난해 23.5%로, 샌드위치는 22.9%에서 24.6%로 증가했다.

이는 1, 2인 가구 증가와 더불어 아침식사를 거르는 것이 다이어트 효과가 없는 것은 물론 건강에 좋지 않다는 인식이 확산된데 따른 것으로 업계는 보고 있다.

실제 질병관리본부의 2013년 국민건강영양조사 결과 19~29세의 40%가 아침 식사를 굶는 것으로 나타났다. 그 이유로는 '시간이 없어서'(47%), '잠을 더 자기 위해'(33%), '밥을 차리기가 귀찮아서'(10%) 등의 순이었다.

그러나 편의점 업체들이 이런 소비자들을 겨냥해 간편하고 손쉽게 아침식사를 해결할 수 있는 간편식을 속속 개발하면서 1인 가구나 맞벌이 가구를 중심으로 관련 시장이 급속하게 팽창하고 있다. 

업계에서는 2009년 7천억원대였던 아침 식사 시장이 올해에는 1조원을 훌쩍 넘을 것으로 보고 있다. 이에 따라 각 업체는 새상품 출시 및 할인 행사 등을 통해 고객 확보에 공을 들이고 있다. 

씨유는 올들어 'CU에서 아침을' 행사를 하고 있다. 아침 시간대에 밥바, 모닝 머핀, 커피 등 25가지 품목으로 구성된 'CU 모닝세트' 구매시 최대 37%를 할인한다. 

특히 매장 내에는 아침식사 상품 전용 진열 공간인 '모닝 존'도 구성해 고객들이 쉽게 상품을 고를 수 있도록 했다. 

지난 2월에는 다양화하는 고객의 입맛을 잡기 위해 죽 전문회사인 본죽과 손잡고 '아침엔 본죽', '전복버섯죽', '참치죽'도 출시했다.

세븐일레븐은 '맞춤형 아침식사'를 테마로 시장 공략에 박차를 가하고 있다.

지난달 '우리들의 아침시간'이라는 조리빵 브랜드를 만들어 '올리브 햄에그머핀', '베이컨 치즈 베이글'을 출시했다. 여성을 겨냥한 '크렌베리치킨샐러드 파스타'도 전략 상품이다. 

여기에 맥도날드 등 패스트푸드 업체들도 아침 간편식 시장 공략에 나서면서 경쟁에 불을 붙이고 있다. 

맥도날드는 오는 9일 아침 메뉴인 '에그 맥머핀'을 무료로 제공하는 '내셔널 브렉퍼스트 데이' 행사를 한다. 오전 7시부터 10시까지 전국 360여 맥모닝 판매 매장을 방문하는 고객 중 매장별 선착순 1천명에게 에그 맥머핀 1개를 무료로 제공한다.  

롯데리아도 이달 한달간 착한아침과 착한점심을 구매하는 고객에게 아메리카노나 소프트콘을 무료로 증정하는 '착한 쿠폰 증정 이벤트'를 하며, 던킨도너츠도 아침세트메뉴 할인 행사를 수시로 하고 있다. 

업계 관계자는 '부담없는 가격에 다양한 상품을 간편하게 즐길 수 있어 아침 간편식 이용 고객이 늘고 있다'며 '업체별로 고객의 취향을 반영한 상품을 속속 출시하며 경쟁도 한층 격화될 것으로 보인다'고 말했다.
