National Gugak Center
Throughout 2019

Every Saturday at 3 p.m., the National Gugak Center holds a performance showcasing traditional Korean music and dance. This series will take place all throughout 2019. Each week the series will exhibit the works of various gugak artists. Various performances throughout the month of May will include the piri, pansori and sanjo. There will also be a traditional fan dance at the end of the month.

A Journey Through Sejong Music: Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra
Sejong Center

The Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra was formed in 1965 and is one of the country's representative ensembles of gugak music. The ensemble has given over 300 performances abroad and seeks to spread traditional Korean music all throughout the globe. At this performance, they will take audiences back 600 years to the time of King Sejong and the Joseon Kingdom. Traditions of court music from those days have been preserved until the modern era. The concert will last two hours and is for audience members ages 7 and up.

Vertiginous Data
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

As technology becomes more and more developed, digital data also grows in relevance. This exhibition shows the relationship between data systems and their influence in society. The exhibition will feature works of both domestic and international artists through a variety of art mediums. The artists hope to express a critical view of such data systems (including block chains, big data, and artificial intelligence) and show visitors their potential consequences. A total of 11 works will be featured at this exhibition.

New Acquisitions 2017-2018
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

Throughout 2017 and 2018, the MMCA gathered a large collection of works and will be displaying them at this large exhibition. There will be both Korean and international artists, including Hans Haacke, Lee Ugno, and Lee Jung-seob. There will be a total of 70 artists featured. The works will take many forms such as paintings, photography, and media art. Alongside the works themselves, the process behind creating, acquiring, and displaying these pieces will also be revealed.

APMA, Chapter One-From the APMA Collection
Amore Pacific Museum of Contemporary Art

Amore Pacific is one of the country's largest beauty and cosmetic companies. Expanding upon their brand, Amore Pacific maintains an ongoing art project to spread contemporary art culture throughout Korea. Until May, they will be holding Chapter One-From the APMA Collection. In this exhibition, artists from around the world will have their works featured as part of the museum's permanent collection. Works take the form of drawings, photographs, sculptures, and media art among others. Choe U-ram, Paik Nam-jun, and Leo Villareal will be several of the artists featured in the exhibition.

Hello My Name is Paul Smith

Paul Smith is a British designer who has gained worldwide attention for his work in men's fashion. Basing his creations on the theme "classic with a twist," his brand brings together both casual and semi-formal styles. He has also branched out into other design realms such as homeware. Smith has collaborated with brands such as New Balance, Porsche, and Cappellini. He was even made a Royal Designer for Industry in England and knighted in 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II herself. This exhibition will feature many of his works, allowing visitors to get a glimpse into his creative intellect.

Jaime Hayon - Serious Fun

Born in Madrid, Jaime Hayon is an artist and designer whose vibrant artistic vision has led him to work with some of the world's top brands including Swarovski and Baccarat. He strives to bring together design, renaissance, art and contemporary culture to his work. Hayon is based in Valencia, but also has studios in Barcelona and Treviso. He has won several Elle Decoration International Design Awards and has been recognized by Time magazine as one of the most influential visionaries today. This exhibition will feature his works, ranging from furniture to decorative pieces.

Dialogue in the Dark

A 100-minute artistic experience in pitch-black darkness, Dialogue in the Dark provides its visitors a new way of approaching the world. It hopes to disconnect visitors from other people and the outside world and create a unique space for each individual. The goal of the exhibition is to provoke thought without the traditional method of visual imagery. This exhibition first started in Germany in 1988. Throughout the past 30 years, it has been displayed all over the globe in 160 cities and has drawn the attention of over 10 million visitors. The exhibition is currently held at D.Space and will be on display indefinitely.

Pierre et Gilles
K Museum of Contemporary Art

Known for their hand-painted photographs, Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard are two French artists. They have been working together since 1976. Pierre is responsible for taking the portraits while Gilles adds the painted elements to create the unique pieces. Their works incorporate both daily life and elements of fantasy. Previous exhibitions were held at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. They have created works for several K-pop musicians including CL and TOP.

I Draw
D Museum

The D Museum is hosting an exhibition to focus on the art of drawing. The works of 16 artists will be featured totaling 350 pieces on display. Different from other exhibitions that focus on digital art and the development of art through technological advances, "I Draw" highlights hand-drawing culture. Some of the artists whose works will be featured are Pierre Le-tan, Hajime Sorayama and Oamul Lu. The exhibition will focus on scenography, scent and sound to convey emotions in visitors.

Disney's The Magic of Animation

Taking visitors behind the scenes of the magical world of Walt Disney, the DDP will host a special exhibition featuring the many works of Disney Animation Studios. The exhibition will be divided into five main parts that will display technological development throughout animation history, the process behind illustrating characters, classic Disney stories including Pinocchio, Bambi and more. There will be over 500 original works on display for visitors who will be able to see every step of the creative process.

From the creators of the exhibitions "Alice: Into the Rabbit Hole," which gathered over 250,000 visitors, as well as "Van Goh Inside" and "Klimt Inside," MMM will focus on the theme of sugar in their latest exhibition. The exhibition will include various mediums including videos, sounds and other visual art. There will be three sections titled "Prologue," "Sugar Planet" and "Epilogue." Each section has a variety of pieces such as "Sugar Hills," "Sweet Rainbow" and "Sparkling Sea." Maum Studio, Yun Seok-cheol, Teje, Jamie Mediaworks, and Lee Ju-yeon are the featured artists of this exhibition.

James Jean: Eternal Journey

James Jean is a Taiwanese-born, American-raised visual artist who attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He was an artist for DC Comics and has worked for Time Magazine, The New York Times and Prada among other world-famous brands. He has published many books and continues to work on illustrations and paintings. He has also given lectures at various art institutions including the Atlanta Art Forum and the Art Center College of Design at Pasadena. Jean has won many prestigious art awards such as the Bronze Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival and the Society of Illustrators Gold Medal in New York. His works will be on display at the Lotte Museum of Art until this fall.

M. Chat, Thoma Vuille

Born in Boudry, Switzerland, Thoma Vuille began painting on the streets of France in 1997 with his trademark cartoon, Monsieur Chat. Vuille started originally as an anonymous artist, but was discovered in 2007. Since then, the character M. Chat has become a cultural phenomenon, appearing on merchandise, train stations and even in a documentary. M. Chat has expanded beyond France and has made appearances in Europe, the United States, South America, Asia, and Africa. This exhibition will feature many of Vuille's work as well as the story behind M. Chat.

The Children's Museum, located in the National Museum of Korea, is an activity-oriented museum where children can appreciate history. The museum exhibits reproductions of artifacts on display in the permanent exhibition hall so as to enable children to gain a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage. Through the exhibition, children can learn about the ways of life and wisdom of people in ancient times through various experiential exhibits. The museum also provides educational programs that allow children to observe and touch cultural artifacts by themselves and develop their interest in history and culture.
