As eyes are the first parts of the face noticed when people look at one another and determine the overall image, many undergo eyelid surgery to bring back vitality to their looks.
While younger people undergo double eyelid surgery to enlarge their eyes, middle-aged patients blepharoplasty to restore sagging eyelids.
"The aging process of the eyes is much faster than other parts of the face because people constantly move their eyes," Ahn said.
"One of the main symptoms of aging is eyelid drooping. In many cases, aging accompanies sagging of the eyebrows, leading to deep wrinkles around the eyes and forehead."
Such conditions can reduce the field of vision and cause discomfort in daily life.
"Blepharoplasty involves the practice of adding or removing fat from the upper and lower eyelids," he explained, citing the difference between upper and lower eyelid surgery.
In upper eyelid surgery, an incision is used to remove skin or fat, whereas in lower eyelid surgery, the incision is used directly below the lash line or the inside of the eyelid.
"The removal of fat and rearrangement of the upper and lower eyelids can improve wrinkles on the forehead," he said. "Most of my patients who are above 55 years old want to look less tired."
He added that rather than transforming into a completely new person, middle-aged cosmetic surgery is proceeded with in an effort to make the patient look 10 years younger.
Ahn said that compared with the past, middle-aged adults try to stay physically active. This phenomenon allows them to spend more on anti-aging procedures.
However, the cosmetic surgeon stressed that it is important to carefully analyze one's condition and choose appropriate treatment.
As for patients, it is necessary to find a doctor who is willing to give the best and safest outcome.
"Cosmetic clinics should refrain from aggressive ads that are similar to those of home shopping channels," he said.
"It's dangerous for patients to judge themselves and choose the types of cosmetic surgery they want to have, even if that involves minimal invasive procedures, like a facelift or filler."
Ahn noted that Korea is well known abroad for its advanced cosmetic procedures, and he is proud to be part of it.
"Not only surgeons' skills but botox, filler and thread products are well-recognized in the industry," he said.
