Consumers are advised to check for the KC mark before buying portable fans. Yonhap |

Popular "hand fans" are proving a hazard for some users, with reports of the devices exploding, overheating or catching users' fingers in their blades.
The small, portable, battery-powered fans are so in vogue that just about everybody appears to carry one.
But the cooling machines have caused over 40 accidents this year, according to the Korea Consumer Agency, Thursday. Only two accidents were reported last year.
This year's accidents involved explosions, overheating or fingers caught in the blades. Some of the faulty fans were not safety tested.
Consumers are advised to check whether the product has the Korea Certification (KC) mark, a safety guarantee required for manufactured products.
