Saturday Performances
National Gugak Center
Throughout 2019

Every Saturday at 3 p.m., the National Gugak Center holds a performance showcasing traditional Korean music and dance. This series will take place all throughout 2018. Each week the series will exhibit the works of various gugak artists. Various performances throughout the month of July will include the piri, pansori and sanjo. There will also be a traditional fan dance at the end of the month.

Gugak Silk Road
Mapo Art Center

This summer, the Mapo Art Center is holding its second gugak festival, which was created to spread traditional Korean music culture. The festival will feature Kim Young-im, a gugak veteran, who will showcase various performance pieces, and Daseureum, a women's gugak group that was formed in 1990 and is dedicated to the mission of not only keeping a strong hold on traditional roots of Korean music, but also developing upon modern interpretations. In total the group has put on over 700 performances.

Vertiginous Data
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

As technology becomes more and more developed, digital data also grows in relevance. This exhibition shows the relationship between data systems and their influence in society. The exhibition will feature works of both domestic and international artists through a variety of art mediums. The artists hope to express a critical view of such data systems (including blockchain, big data and artificial intelligence) and show visitors their potential consequences. Eleven pieces will be featured at this exhibition.

New Acquisitions 2017-2018
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

Throughout 2017 and 2018, the MMCA gathered a large collection of works and will be displaying them at this large exhibition. There will be both Korean and international artists, including Hans Haacke, Lee Ugno and Lee Jung-seob. There will be a total of 70 artists featured. The works will take many forms such as paintings, photography and media art. Alongside the works themselves, the process behind creating, acquiring and displaying these pieces will also be revealed.

Immortality for All: Anton Vidokle
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

This trilogy film series is by Anton Vidokle, a Russian artist who currently lives in New York and Berlin. The videos focus on the theme of Russian Cosmism, which is a school of thought by 18th-century Russian philosopher Nikolai Fedorov that sought to combine the fields of science, religion and art. The videos are titled "This is Cosmos" (31 minutes), "The Communist Revolution Was Caused by the Sun" (34 minutes) and "Immortality and Resurrection for All" (34 minutes). Vidokle's works have been shown around the world including Shanghai, Istanbul and Venice. He is also the founder and editor of e-flux Journal, a publication that features essays and art by modern creative artists.

Hello My Name is Paul Smith

Paul Smith is a British designer who has gained worldwide attention for his work in men's fashion. Basing his creations on the theme "classic with a twist," his brand brings together both casual and semi-formal styles. He has also branched out into other design realms such as homeware. Smith has collaborated with brands such as New Balance, Porsche and Cappellini. He was even made a Royal Designer for Industry in England and knighted in 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II herself. This exhibition will feature many of his works, allowing visitors to get a glimpse into his creative intellect.

Jaime Hayon ― Serious Fun

Born in Madrid, Jaime Hayon is an artist and designer whose vibrant artistic vision has led him to work with some of the world's top brands including Swarovski and Baccarat. He strives to bring together design, renaissance, art and contemporary culture to his work. Hayon is based in Valencia, but also has studios in Barcelona and Treviso. He has won several Elle Decoration International Design Awards and has been recognized by Time magazine as one of the most influential visionaries today. This exhibition will feature his works, ranging from furniture to decorative pieces.

Meet Vincent Van Gogh

Created by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, this exhibition introduces audiences to the world of Vincent van Gogh, one of the world's most remembered and celebrated painters today. Van Gogh has created historic pieces like "The Starry Night" and "Sunflowers." The exhibition will be divided into sections such as Wheatfield and "Yellow House" in which visitors will be able to not only view van Gogh's paintings, but also find themselves immersed in life-sized replicas of his town. This exhibition received the 2017 Themed Entertainment Association Award (THEA) for its excellence.

M.C. Escher, the Best Artist of the 20th Century

M.C. Escher (1898-1972) was a graphic artist who was born in the Netherlands. He studied art from a young age and sketched all throughout his youth. Many of his early works would become inspiration for his later works. His art is very mathematical and includes tessellations and other structured and calculated patterns. Some of his most famous works include "Ascending and Descending," "Relativity" and his "Metamorphosis" series. The exhibition will be split into four main sections, each representing a different aspect of his work. For example, one section will be dedicated to his tessellations while another to his travel sketches. Visitors will be able to experience his creativity and artistic insights at this exhibition, which claims he is the best artist of the 20th century.

I Draw
D Museum

The D Museum is hosting an exhibition to focus on the art of drawing. The works of 16 artists will be featured totaling 350 pieces on display. Different from other exhibitions that focus on digital art and the development of art through technological advances, "I Draw" highlights hand-drawing culture. Some of the artists whose works will be featured are Pierre Le-tan, Hajime Sorayama and Oamul Lu. The exhibition will focus on scenography, scent and sound to convey emotions in visitors.

Disney's The Magic of Animation

Taking visitors behind the scenes of the magical world of Walt Disney, the DDP will host a special exhibition featuring the many works of Disney Animation Studios. The exhibition will be divided into five main parts that will display technological development throughout animation history, the process behind illustrating characters, classic Disney stories including Pinocchio, Bambi and more. There will be over 500 original works on display for visitors who will be able to see every step of the creative process.

Artist's Atelier: Katie Scott

Katie Scott is a freelance British illustrator who graduated from the University of Brighton. She draws inspiration from nature, and her works include many botanical representations. She works both as a freelance artist as well as for commercial branding. She has worked with many brands such as Soho House, Nike, H&M and Converse, and is known for her fusion of the real and imaginary. She has also illustrated several books including "Animalium" and "Botanicum." Her works will be on display until September at the D Museum.

James Jean: Eternal Journey

James Jean is a Taiwanese-born, American-raised visual artist who attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He was an artist for DC Comics and has worked for Time Magazine, The New York Times and Prada among other world-famous brands. He has published many books and continues to work on illustrations and paintings. He has also given lectures at various art institutions including the Atlanta Art Forum and the Art Center College of Design at Pasadena. Jean has won many prestigious art awards such as the Bronze Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival and the Society of Illustrators Gold Medal in New York. His works will be on display at the Lotte Museum of Art until this fall.

This large-scale exhibition will bring together the works of several of the most prominent artists from the 19th to 21st centuries. Seurat, Mondrian, Gaudi, Matisse, Degas, Millet, Gogh, and Mucha will be the featured artists. Their genres range from post-impressionist paintings to theatrical posters. Several of them have become legendary figures of art history, influencing generations of art students and curators to this day. Due to its comprehensive timeline and range of styles, this exhibition will be appropriate for art lovers of all backgrounds.

The Children's Museum, located in the National Museum of Korea, is an activity-oriented museum where children can appreciate history. The museum exhibits reproductions of artifacts on display in the permanent exhibition hall so as to enable children to gain a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage. Through the exhibition, children can learn about the ways of life and wisdom of people in ancient times through various experiential exhibits. The museum also provides educational programs that allow children to observe and touch cultural artifacts by themselves and develop their interest in history and culture.
