Seoul Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2020, the largest fashion event in Korea, has been canceled due to the fast spread of coronavirus infections here, its organizer said.
Seoul Fashion Week was scheduled to be held between March 17 and 21. The organizer also said its trade fair "Generation Next Seoul" will be canceled for the same reason.
An official of the Seoul Metropolitan Government said one third of the 36 participants scheduled to take part in Seoul Fashion Week said they intended not to participate due to the coronavirus. After consulting with the remaining participants, the organizer decided to cancel the event. All deposits for the show will be returned.
Seoul's biannual fashion event has been one of the key events for the fashion industry in Korea. It is seen by many as a breath of fresh air for overseas buyers in the Asian -― and global ― fashion world, attracting tens of thousands of people each time it is held.
34 fashion brands presented new collections at the 2020 Spring/Summer event last year, while some 120 brands participated in the concurrent fashion trade fair.
As of Wednesday afternoon, 12 people in Korea had died from the coronavirus infection, while 1,261 people were confirmed as infected patients.
