    Moves on the chessboard
Now the real games begin; the interplay between North and South Korea and between the U.S. and both Koreas. The players may have shifted some of the pieces around the chessboard during these most political of Winter Olympics, but it's much too early to know what happens next, much less the final moves.

    Kudos to Team Kim!
The ongoing PyeongChang Winter Olympics are undisputedly featuring, among others, the five “Kims,” the ladies curling team of the Republic of Korea, who share the same surname (金).

    China's opportunism with North Korea
What was the real reason for China to send troops to aid North Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War? The stock answer has always been that China made this decision because the fall of North Korea into the hands of the United States would constitute endangering China's security itself. This served as key evidence to reinforce the rationale that China regarded North Korea as China's security “buffer zone.” Now, we have a new explanation.

    American paternalism
The U.S. has been doing itself no favors in its rather paternalistic response to the thawing relations between the two Koreas at the Winter Olympics.

    Conflict of interests at NBC
The strange case of NBC sports commentator Joshua Cooper Ramo touched the sensitive nerves of millions of Koreans. Thousands responded with indignation, aggrieved feelings, even outrage to his on-air remark at the Winter Olympics to the effect that “every Korean will tell you that Japan as a cultural and technological and economic example has been so important to their own transformation.”

    Whose 'future' is it anyway?
There was a little confusion over names of political parties recently. Well, lots of confusion, actually. But it provides an interesting insight into the political narratives that will be in play come the June midterm elections in Korea.

    Stop comparing yourself to others
Somehow, I am on the receiving end of daily emails from GovLoop.com. GovLoop is the “the premier social network connecting over 250,000 federal, state, and local government innovators.” GovLoop aims to “inspire public sector professionals to better service by acting as the knowledge network for government.”

    Going home
This is the season of going home for family reunions, particularly between children working in big cities and their parents living in rural villages.

    Unification soap opera
I'm going to write about the unification flag and hubbub surrounding it these days. But before I do, a few disclaimers. I'm a fan of eventual unification. The 1950-53 Korean War is an unending monstrosity. It can't prevent South Korea's continuing advance, but the grotesque division is something to live down. Second, I am thrilled for South Korea and the world the Winter Olympics is happening in PyeongChang. I've enjoyed watching from Chicago, and everything I've witnessed occurs with the usual attention to detail, welcoming atmosphere, and thorough enjoyment of competition in global friends...

    Herculean task for Moon
On March 18, the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games and Paralympics will be officially over with athletes and countries counting their medals and rankings. For President Moon Jae-in and his diplomatic team, however, the main games will start from then.
