Starting from Tuesday, Kim started his role as the new chairman of the educational and social organization. He is widely known for his economic expertise, having worked at high-level positions in major government organizations.
He studied economics at Seoul National University and received a doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
His career includes serving as a senior secretary on former President Lee Myung-bak's economic policy team. Kim also served as the chief of the Korea Institute of Public Finance and state-run think tank Korea Development Institute. He also worked as the former president of Hallym University for five years beginning in 2016.
As the 24th governor of the Bank of Korea, he led the central bank for four years beginning in April 2010.
"Kim will help develop the foundation with his broad social experiences," the foundation said.
Yuhan Foundation was established as a non-profit educational organization focusing on providing scholarship programs to teenagers in need. The foundation also runs a series of educational and social projects for the welfare of society.
Kim is the first chairman of the foundation from the financial circle. The foundation appointed him for the position in recognition of his keen interest in education and social welfare while in the position of president at Hallym University.
In early 2000s, he also taught economics at Kyunghee University's Graduate School of International Studies.
His overseas career includes serving as the former ambassador and permanent representative of Korea to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) from October 2008 to April 2010.
