NCT's Ten embarks on solo journey with genre-blending tracks

NCT's Ten, known as one of the most powerful performers within the group, made his solo debut, Tuesday, with the inaugural mini-album, "TEN."

As a part of SM Entertainment's ambitious boy group NCT, Ten debuted as a rapper in 2016 with the track "The 7th Sense," quickly capturing spotlight with his iconic dance skills.

However, the new album not only showcases the singer's well-known talents, but also highlights his multifaceted abilities honed over the years. The album features six English tracks covering various musical genres, including the title track "Nightwalker."

"All six tracks explore different genres," Ten said during a press event at YES24 Live Hall in Gwangjin District, Seoul, Tuesday. "I prepared a variety of elements because I wanted to demonstrate to many people the diverse charms and talents that I possess."

During his time as a member of the popular male K-pop act, Ten underscored the contrast between group performances and the personal expression found in his solo work.

"While in a group, my role was mainly to interpret and adapt to the given music [under the group's concpet], but as a solo artist, I'm actively engaged in crafting my own work and the path I want to pursue," he said.

Elaborating on the creative process, the idol said, "Personally, I have so many aspirations which make it hard for me to define myself. So the objective of this project was to explore my own identity, and, in essence, this album embodies all the various facets of myself that cannot be confined to a single definition."

The lead single, "Nightwalker," encapsulates his multifaceted nature. In the vibrant cadence of its beats and the pulsating rhythm of its bass, this dance track weaves a lyrical narrative of being irresistibly drawn to a captivating presence.

The song's choreography presents a fresh allure, distinct from his previous works. It incorporates elaborate tutting movements, a dance style primarily focused on arm movements to create geometric shapes, perfectly complementing the ethereal mood of the track.

"I originally crafted choreography with intricate and powerful movements for the chorus, but this time, I integrated simpler and repetitive choreography to convey a different allure," he explained.

Fellow SM artists also extended words of encouragement to celebrate his solo debut. Ten recalled inspirational messages from NCT leader Taeyong, SHINee member Taemin and TVXQ! member Yunho.

"I met Taeyong in the practice room yesterday. He encouraged me and asked if I was facing challenges. [...] It was reassuring," he shared.

"I also shared the song with Taemin and Yunho. They both emphasized the importance of self-belief and urged me to pursue what I truly desire, rather than dictating what I should do."

Following the release of his solo album, Ten will embark on his first tour of Asia, commencing in Seoul on Feb. 16 and 17, before heading to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta and other cities. The concert in Bangkok, hosted at the Impact Arena, reportedly sold out all seats, leading to the addition of extra sessions.

"I will be showcasing various dance genres, including Latin and classical choreography. There will also be stages that will cater to fans of rock music, offering a diverse range of enjoyment," Ten assured.
