DinDin is a name that resonates with anyone who follows Korean entertainment broadcasts. Known for his vibrant personality, he is currently making waves on KBS's "2 Days & 1 Night" and hosts his own SBS radio show, "DinDin's Music High."
With a career spanning a decade, DinDin has seamlessly transitioned from a cheerful entertainer to a more mature individual capable of sharing his candid stories. In a press interview at Superbell Entertainment's headquarters in Mapo District, Seoul, Nov. 8, the singer-entertainer delved into his personal journey, reflecting on his evolving perspective on embracing his unique path.
"I used to grapple with feelings of inadequacy, not truly understanding myself or my passions. I had a negative mindset and often found myself envious of others," the 31-year-old said.
"But over the course of my 10-year career, I gradually came to terms with the fact that my aspirations and those of others were distinct. From that point on, I began to explore what I could do to excel on my own."
DinDin debuted as a rapper on Mnet's 2013 reality show, "Show Me the Money" Season 2, but it was his appearance in various broadcast platforms that brought him bigger fame.
"When I first entered the industry, people were more drawn to my character rather than my rap skills. I was young and eager, so I worked harder on shows than pursuing my musical career," DinDin reminisced.
Nonetheless, as he approached his 30s, DinDin revealed that he had entered a phase of self-discovery.
"Up until then, I hadn't fully comprehended the world and was just satisfied with my everyday life. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led me to spend more time in introspection. This period of self-reflection was not without its challenges, as it forced me to confront changes in my personality that had occurred over the years," he said.
Embracing these changes, however, brought a positive shift in DinDin's life.
"In my earlier days, I relished genuine interactions with so many people. But as I matured, I found solace in solitary moments and realized I could enjoy my own company. Acknowledging this change brought me a new sense of ease. In the past, my public persona and my true self were indistinguishable. Now, I've learned to differentiate between the two," he explained.

Despite his substantial presence in the broadcasting world, DinDin still holds a deep affinity to his title of being a singer.
"I appreciate all the opportunities I've received, but at my core, I consider making music my profession. Working on music remains the most fulfilling aspect of my career. While my musical endeavors may not have garnered significant recognition yet, I'm grateful that I can still pursue my artistic desires," he said.
DinDin's dedication to his craft is evident in his consistent album releases, with five singles this year and another one set for release on Nov. 24. Reflecting on his journey, he said his proudest achievement was not abandoning his musical aspirations.
"Although I initially debuted as a rapper, my focus shifted towards broadcasting, leading some hip-hop enthusiasts to have doubts about me," he admitted. "However, in 2019, I made a resolute decision to pursue my dream of music again and I've been steadfastly working toward that goal ever since."
The ongoing discovery of his musical talent by audiences more familiar with his TV persona motivates him to continue.
"Even after a decade, the audience's continued rediscovery of my singing skills is amusing. Witnessing the surprise on people's faces when they hear my songs, especially those who remember me primarily for my lighthearted on-screen persona, fuels my determination to continue making music."
While he has yet to produce a chart-topping hit, DinDin remains content.
"Of course, I want to release a hit song, but I've witnessed fellow artists achieving chart-toppers and their musical burden growing immense soon after. My goal is to build a substantial catalog of high-quality songs. I believe that good music will eventually find its place in people's hearts."
To commemorate his 10th anniversary, DinDin will host a concert called "Dinvitation: Double Party," bringing fans closer to his world featuring a strong guest list of Sleepy, Jeong Se-woon and Bang Yong-guk, a former member of the K-pop group B.A.P.
DinDin described the event as more than a performance, but a celebration of the significant milestones he's achieved over the past 10 years.
"This concert marks a decade since my debut and I wanted to gather people who hold a special place in my heart," he said.
