The Bunker des Lumieres, a digital art center that opened on Jeju Island as part of French company Culturespaces’ immersive multimedia exhibition projects around the world, is ready to host its first show featuring a Korean artist.
“The Island of Golden Mean, Jeju,” which begins its run on Dec. 1, will transform the exuberant art of Jeju-based creator Lee Wal-chong into a multi-sensory spectacle via floor-to-ceiling digital projections and orchestral soundscapes.
The exhibition, designed and produced by Tmonet, marks the first time for a Korean artist to take center stage in any of Culturespaces’ “Des Lumieres” venues across the globe. Tmonet is the local operator for the Bunker des Lumieres.
Tucked away under the island’s eastern hillside near Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), the center was once a state-owned fiber-optic cable bunker before it was reborn as an immersive cultural complex in 2018.
In “The Island of Golden Mean, Jeju,” Lee’s decades-long painting series of the same name will envelop the building’s four walls and floor. Known for its recognizably cheerful portrayal of everyday life populated by islanders, wildlife and foliage, the series originated when the artist relocated to the city of Seogwipo in 1991.
Arranged in five thematic sections, the show will shower its visitors with pulsating, vibrant seascapes and imagery born from the painter’s philosophical musings.
Tmonet announced that starting with the upcoming showcase, it plans to produce more interactive spectacles focused on Korean creatives and subsequently export the content to other “Des Lumières” venues in major cities like Paris, New York and Amsterdam.
“By putting Lee, a painter who captures the joy of Jeju life with splendid and brilliant images, in a dialogue with the Bunker des Lumières, a new kind of immersive art exhibition has been born,” the company’s CEO Park Jin-woo stated.
“Through such showcases, we aim to present the distinct sensibility and culture of Korea to the world.”
