Two Korean cartoons have been selected to compete for the prize in the official selection of the upcoming Angouleme International Comics Festival, one of the largest and most renowned events of its kind in the world.

The 50th edition of the French comics festival has nominated Choi Kyu-sok's sixth volume of "Songgot" for the official selection category and Park Yoon-sun's "Boubou and His Friends" for the youth category.

"Songgot," set in a multinational retail market, details Korea's economic reality of the 2000s as it follows the journey of union activists who fight against the managerial team's unfair dismissal of temporary workers. The story was adapted into a drama, "Songgot: The Piercer," on JTBC in 2015.

"Boubou and His Friends" centers on a dog named Boubou and his human friends as they go on a series of magical adventures filled with encounters with imaginary creatures.

The winning titles will be announced at the festival during its run from Jan. 26 to 29.

In 2017, "Bad Friend," penned by cartoonist Ancco, received the Revelation Award given to up-and-coming creators who have published a maximum of three works in French. It became the first Korean title ever to be recognized at the festival.
