Actor Yoo Ah-in and actress Shin Se-kyung said Wednesday they are excited to play a couple in the upcoming SBS historical drama "Six Flying Dragons," three years after they were on-screen lovers in the drama "Fashion King."
The Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) epic follows three historical figures who helped found the dynasty and three fictional characters invented by writers Kim Young-hyun, who wrote the 2003 hit drama "Daejanggeum," and Park Sang-yeon, author of the 2000 mystery thriller "Joint Security Area."
"I'm a huge fan of Sekyung," said Yoo, who is best known for his recent blockbuster successes "Veteran" and "The Throne," at a news conference in Seoul. "She doesn't hold anything back even though she's had to wear some unsightly makeup. It's comforting and reassuring to have her on set."
Shin was equally enthusiastic about the rising star.
"I'm a huge fan of Yoo as well," she said laughingly. "It's true. We developed a sense of camaraderie several years back when a lot of things were still new to me and when I was more immature and inexperienced. He possesses a lot of personality traits I'd like to emulate."
Yoo and Shin had previously played the lead roles in "Fashion King," a 2011 drama on the same network that depicts the struggles of aspiring fashion designers in South Korea.
In "Six Flying Dragons," Yoo portrays a young Yi Bang-won, a Korean historical figure who conquers the Goryeo Dynasty with his father Yi Seong-gae.
Shin is his fictitious lover Boon-yi, who, according to the actress, is a powerful female figure rarely seen on other shows.
"I asked myself if I'd be able to fight such unbelievable circumstances like she does," Shin said. "I don't think I could. Ordinary women wouldn't be able to wrap their heads around her."
"Six Flying Dragons" also stars actor Kim Myung-min, best known for his role in the 2004 historical drama "Immortal Admiral Lee Soon-shin," and Cheon Ho-jin, a veteran actor and Yoo's co-star in 2015 action film "Veteran."
Byun Yo-han, who got his break with a supporting role in the 2014 office drama "Misaeng," and Yoon Kyun-sang from recent SBS dramas "Pinocchio" and "The Time We Were Not in Love" play the other two fictional characters: Lee Bang-ji and Mu-hyul.
The pilot episode for "Six Flying Dragons" will air Monday night on the terrestrial network SBS. (Yonhap)
