"Burning" has become the first South Korean film to be shortlisted for the Foreign Language Film award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy said on its website on Monday (U.S. time).
The movie, by director Lee Chang-dong, was among nine foreign language Oscar contenders, along with Colombia's "Birds of Passage," Denmark's "The Guilty," Germany's "Never Look Away," Japan's "Shoplifters," Kazakhstan's "Ayka," Lebanon's "Capernaum," Mexico's "Roma" and Poland's "Cold War."
Earlier this month, the movie won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's (LAFCA) award for best 2018 foreign language film. It was also awarded the best 2018 foreign language film prize from the Toronto Film Critics Association. Steven Yeun, an actor in the film, won the Best Supporting Actor award from the association.
The New York Times also named Yoo Ah-in, who played the lead role in the film, as one of The Best Actors of 2018. He was the only Asian actor named by the Times.
The Academy also announced shortlists of semi-finalists in eight other categories, such as documentary feature and short film (animated). Nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards will be unveiled on Jan. 22, 2019. (Yonhap)
