Academy Awards nominates first Korean

'Youth' 조수미, 아카데미 최초 한국인 후보올라

Soprano Jo Su-mi became the first Korean whose song was nominated for an Academy Award.

The 88th American awards ceremony honoring cinematic achievements nominated Jo's song "Simple Song #3" from the movie "Youth" for the Best Original Song. American composer David Lang wrote the song.

Jo also plays herself in the comedy-drama, which stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel.

"I was surprised because classical songs are rarely nominated," Jo told eNEWS 24. "This year marks the 30th anniversary since I first gave an international performance. I think the nomination is a good start for this year."

The song was also nominated in the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, but the honor went to "Writing's on the Wall" by Britain's Sam Smith. The song is the theme for the latest James Bond movie "Spectre."

The Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 28.

'Youth' 조수미, 아카데미 최초 한국인 후보올라

한국인 최초로 아카데미상 후보에 오른 소프라노 조수미는 15일 '기쁘고 행복하다'고 소감을 밝혔다.

조수미는 이날 소속사 SMI엔터테인먼트㈜를 통해 '아카데미 주제가상 부문에 '심플송'이 노미네이트 됐다는 소식을 듣고 깜짝 놀랐다'며 이 같이 말했다.

조수미는 전날(현지시간) 영화예술과학아카데미(AMPAS)의 아카데미상 후보 지명에서 '유스'에서 부른 주제가 `심플송'으로 아카데미상 주제가상 후보에 이름을 올렸다.

조수미는 '클래식 곡이 노미네이트 되는 것은 드문 일이라 더 놀랐다'며 '올해는 제가 세계무대에 데뷔한 지 30년이 되는 해인데 시작이 좋은 것 같다'고 말했다.

그는 ''유스'는 아름다운 영화이고 특히 많은 생각을 하게 만들어 준다'며 '이 소식으로 더욱 많은 분들이 봐주셨으면 좋겠다'고 덧붙였다.

유스의 주제가 심플송은 미국의 작곡가 데이비드 랑이 영화 속 주인공 프레드 친구로 언급된 스트라빈스키의 음악에서 모티브를 얻어 작곡한 것이다. 조수미는 이 영화에 특별 출연하며 직접 주제가를 불러 화제를 낳았다.

아카데미상 주제가상 후보에는 심플송 외에 '그레이의 50가지 그림자'의 '언드 잇', '레이싱 익스팅션'의 `만타 레이', '헌팅 그라운드'의 `틸 잇 해픈스 투 유', '007 스펙터'의 `라이팅 온 더 월' 등이 올랐다.

아카데미 시상식에서는 주제가상 후보로 오른 곡들로 무대에서 축하 공연을 하는 것이 일반적이어서 조수미가 한국인으로는 처음으로 아카데미상 시상식 무대에 설 가능성도 있다.

아카데미상 시상식은 오는 2월28일 크리스 록의 사회로 진행된다.

앞서 조수미는 지난 11일 열린 골든글로브상 시상식에서도 주제가상 후보로 선정됐지만, 수상을 하지는 못했다. (연합뉴스)
