Jang Tae-yoo, the producer of the SBS hit drama "My Love from the Star," said Monday that he wants to make a sequel if the opportunity arises.
"It is possible to make a sequel although I will have to talk with the scriptwriter," Jang said on "Good Morning," an SBS TV show. The drama that starred the two charismatic actors Jun Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun, has gained huge popularity in Korea and China with ripple effects.
Chinese state CCTV television recently carried a nine-minute special on the drama, while the China Daily, in its op-ed piece on Feb. 21 attributed the Korean drama's success in China to "great innovations in South Korean TV productions in terms of themes and narrative patterns." The drama has catapulted heartthrob Kim to a new level of stardom in China where he is slated to appear on Jiangsu Satellite TV's "Super Brain" on March 8.
Jang explained that the character Do Min-jun (played by Kim), travels back and forth between Earth and his planet, leaving ample possibilities in the storyline.
"Do can be portrayed through diverse eras such as during the Joseon Kingdom, Japanese colonial period, or in the ‘70s. Maybe Chun Song-i (played by Jun) might not be Do's first love. I want to make it if possible," he said.
But whether the two mega stars Kim and Jun can join the possible sequel remains unclear. The two have worked previously in the film "The Thieves," after which Jun urged Kim to join her for the drama "My Love."
The drama has been creating a stir in China and Chinese speaking areas even though the show has ended here. The program has gone viral due to rapid online distribution in China, and has more than 600 million views on IQIYI, a Chinese online video site.
"I am really sad that my favorite drama has ended," said Jessine Teo, a Singaporean who is a fan of the Korean wave and watched the drama on the peer-to-peer streaming video freeware.
The drama is based on the historical Gwanghae Journal from the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910) which records a mysterious UFO appearing in Gangwon Province. The series features an "alien" who appears as a human and has been living in Korea for the past 400 years.
