Tiffany Young from Girls' Generation will star in the hit musical "Chicago," which celebrates its 21st year in Korea.

Tiffany will play Roxie Hart, a chorus girl who rises to fame in prison, at D-Cube Arts Center in southwestern Seoul from April to July.

"Chicago" premiered in Korea on Dec. 8, 2000 and has been performed 15 times here, enjoying popularity with an average theater occupancy rate of 90 percent.

The musical revolves around two publicity-craving murderesses Velma and Roxie and their eloquent lawyer Billy in the crime-tainted Chicago in the 1920s, based on a true story.

Tiffany will alternate the role with singer-turned-actress Ivy and musical actress Min Kyoung-a. Ivy plays the young, ambitious murderess for the sixth time this year, while Min is a newcomer to the show along with Tiffany. Both Tiffany and Min won the role through an open audition last summer.

After debuting in 2007 as a member of K-pop act Girls' Generation, Tiffany left SM Entertainment in 2017, while remaining in the girl band, and moved to the U.S. to continue her career as a solo artist. She released her EP "Lips on Lips" in English in 2019.

Tiffany Young will play Roxie Hart in the musical 'Chicago.' / Courtesy of Seensee Company

This is Tiffany's second time to appear in a musical, following her portrayal of Carmen Diaz in the musical "Fame" back in 2011.

"This is my return to the musical stage in 10 years. I always dreamed of being in a musical and Roxie was one of the top three roles I really wanted to play. I've always been checking auditions for 'Chicago' and came to the last audition, going through a 14-day quarantine upon my arrival in Korea only for the audition. I thoroughly studied the script, setting, character and music," Tiffany said.

"I interpret Roxie as a 'dreamer' and am really honored to join the 21st anniversary production as Roxie, the role I've always dreamed of. I am looking forward to meeting the audience on stage, after going through hardship in 2020."

Opposite Tiffany, veteran actresses Choi Jung-won and Yoon Gong-ju will play Velma, while Park Gun-hyung and Choi Jae-rim take on the role of Billy.

The musical "Chicago" will run from April 2 to July 18.
