Hwang Min-hyun's screen debut 'Live On' ends with disappointingly low rating

After floating to fame through the hit K-pop audition show "Produce 101" in 2017, singer Hwang Min-hyun was highly anticipated to broaden his presence in the entertainment industry with a lead role in the musical "Marie Antoinette" among others.

Adding to his repertoire, Hwang decided last year to make his small screen debut in the JTBC teen series "Live On," which will be remembered as the network's most unpopular series of all time and one of his more regrettable decisions as an actor. The eight-part series ended Tuesday with a 0.8 percent viewership rating.

After taking off with a rating of 1.3 percent Nov. 17, the series soon plummeted to a 0.428 percent in spite of its prime-time airing. This is slightly lower than that of the network's previous record low of 0.429 percent for the 2012 series "Dear. You."

Directed by Kim Sang-woo, whose previous work includes the hit series "My Mister," "Live On" revolves around a popular high school girl Ho-rang (Jung Da-bin) developing an unlikely romance with the president of the broadcasting club Eun-taek (Hwang).

The series drew extensive attention even before airing as it was a project by Playlist Studio, a production company that has a track record of producing popular web-based content including "A-Teen."

However, the company's first attempt at the longer runtime series resulted in disappointing reviews and ratings.
