In the upcoming Netflix original series, So-yeon, played by Ko Sung-hee, is a public relations officer at an eyewear company.
Her company develops holographic eyeglasses, through which a person can see and communicate with a good-looking, kind-hearted hologram named Holo, played by Yoon Hyun-min.
She becomes a beta tester for Holo, and her AI companion seems just as real to her as anyone else in the world.
Meanwhile Nan-do, the developer of Holo, watches their relationship closely. He has the same physical appearance as the AI hologram, but has a completely different personality.
On playing the dual roles as Holo and Nan-do, actor Yoon said it was a challenging but worthwhile learning experience.
"While shooting the series, I wanted to make sure there was a distinct difference between the two of them," Yoon said during a web press conference. The press conference was supposed to be held Tuesday, but was streamed online instead due to the coronavirus outbreak.
"I accepted the offer because I was really drawn to the Netflix platform and I thought playing dual roles would benefit my acting career. Above all, I really wanted to be part of this project because it conveys such a relatable and heartwarming story."
Actress Ko said she took the role because it was a fresh experiment.
"I loved So-yeon's character because she and I have a lot in common, and the idea of human-AI romance was fun to work on," Ko said. "However, there were times when I found it hard to express affection toward an AI."
Director Lee Sang-yeob mentioned that although the story revolves around the AI hologram, the general theme is about humans and their sense of loneliness in a hyper-connected world.
"There's a heavy theme of healing that viewers will appreciate," Lee said.
Screenwriter Ryu Yong-jae said that he got the idea from AlphaGo, Google Deep Mind's AI Go player, who defeated Go Master Lee Se-dol in 2016.
"I wrote the story inspired by AlphaGo. The series tells a strange but heartwarming love story," Ryu said.
"My Holo Love" will be released through Netflix, Feb. 7.
Lately many cultural performances and events have been either canceled or suspended to prevent the further spread of the deadly coronavirus. Korea has so far reported 16 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
