Actor Jang Keun-suk will do alternative work for his mandatory military service because he has a mild bipolar disorder that causes uncommon mood swings.
According to the actor's agency Friday, Jang, 31, was diagnosed with the disorder in 2011.
The actor reportedly underwent repeated physical examinations after which it was decided he was unsuitable for active duty.
The agency said the actor had tried his best to overcome the disorder.
Jang wrote to fans on Friday, saying, "Let's say good bye to each other just for a moment."
"I want to make good use of two years ― I have never taken a rest for 27 years since my debut."
Jang will join boot camp on July 16.
