A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck in waters off Japan’s sparsely populated Izu Island early Wednesday.
The quake happened at 1:22 a.m., with the epicenter 400 kilometers from the island. There was no tsunami warning or reports of damage or casualties.
Meanwhile, Korea experienced another series of weak tremors in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Tuesday.
A 2.9-magnitude aftershock was detected eight kilometers south-southwest of the city around 3:40 a.m., followed by consecutive weak tremors with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 3.0, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.
The most recent aftershock was the 409th after a destructive 5.8-magnitude quake struck the city on Sept. 12.
“The quake in Japan on Wednesday and the recent quakes in Gyeongju don’t seem to have a connection,” the KMA told The Korea Times.
