British Home Secretary Theresa May is set to become Britain’s new Prime Minister on Wednesday (local time) after her only rival in the race pulled out unexpectedly.
According to CNN, May was officially named Prime Minister after Andrea Leadsom withdrew on Monday following controversial comments about motherhood and leadership.
“I am honored and humbled to have been chosen by the Conservative Party to become its leader,” May said in London. “We need a strong new positive vision for the future of our country, a vision of a country that works not for the privileged few, but that works for every one of us. Brexit means Brexit, and we are going to make a success of it.”
Incumbent Prime Minister David Cameron, who was expected to stay until 2019, will resign on Wednesday.
