The remains of four bodies dating back to 1,000 A.D. have been unearthed in separate tombs in Lima, Peru, the British Daily Mail reports.

Archaeologists unearthed the remains of three adult women and one man belonging to the ancient Ichma culture in a residential neighborhood.

The remains were in a seated position, looking out to sea alongside such offerings as ceramics and weaving tools.

Archeologists believe the position of the bodies is related to a religious ritual.

The discovery is expected to help archaeologists study and understand the Ichma culture, which dominated Peru’s central coast before the rise of the Inca.
