Photographer captures moment hunter becomes hunted

Photographer Slater Moore has captured the incredible moment of a sea lion feasting on a shark off the coast of Newport Beach, California.

While on a whale-watching boat Wednesday, he saw a sea lion attack a small thresher shark.

He even flew his drone over the scene to get a better view.

“It was absolutely insane,” he said. “Predator becoming prey, nature’s finest!”

But sea lions eating sharks is common in California, according to Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University at Long Beach. “It’s pretty common here in California,” he said. “California sea lions will kill 1.5-meter leopard sharks.”

Meanwhile, the Marine Mammal Center, California, calls sea lions “opportunistic” eaters because they feed on a wide range of prey, including squid, octopus, herring, rockfish, mackerel and small sharks.
