Wrestler dies after hitting ring rope

A Mexican wrestler has died in a ring after hitting his neck on a ring rope.

El Hijo del Perro Aguayo, 35, fell unconscious after his head hit the rope during in Tijuana on Friday. He died on Saturday.

“The referee did not stop the fight immediately, apparently because he did not realize the seriousness of the injury.

“I have no words for this terrible news,” tweeted Joaquin Roldan, director of the AAA wrestling federation. “My sincerest condolences to the Aguayo Ramirez family.”

The state prosecution said the wrestler died from trauma to his neck and a cervical fracture.

Organizers have been under fire because doctors were not immediately available near the ring. The doctor in charge had been treating another injured wrestler, said wrestling official Juan Carlos Pelayo.

“The reaction for medical attention was quick, in my opinion,” he said.

Aguayo had wrestled for about two decades and was famous as the son of wrestling legend Pedro “Perro” Aguayo.
