Mysterious dead species found inside tuna can

Netizens are trying to uncover the identity of a creature found inside a tuna can by a British woman, who then took a photo of her find and posted it on her SNS last month.

An original post by Zoe Butler from Jan. 20 shows an opened tuna can made by Princes which inside had the head of a creature protruding among tuna flakes.

“Can you tell me what this is? Nearly fed this to my children!! From Princes tuna chunks can,” Zoe said in the tweet with the photo. She reported the case to the seafood company which BuzzFeed said Thursday is investigating the case.

Butler posted a second tweet on Feb. 2 saying “No update on the creature other than it is currently being investigated at an external laboratory.”

The tweet attracted replies offering tips on the creature’s identity. They guessed it might be head of Cymothoa exigua that lives inside a fish, a developing sea turtle, blowfish fetus, tadpole, crab or even an extraterrestrial species.
