Two-year-old fatally shoots himself

A toddler in Florida accidentally shot himself with a gun that he found in his father’s car while left unattended.

Caleb Ahles, 2, was left unattended while his parents were getting ready to move out of their house in Tarpon Springs, northwest of Tampa, when the baby crawled across the seats and found his father’s .380 caliber handgun.

According to the Pinellas County sheriff’s office, the boy had pointed the gun at himeslf and pulled the trigger ― there was no lock in the gun.

“It’s just one of those things that happens where everything lined up the wrong way where we had a 2-year-old that was able to take a gun, pick it up, turn it around, and he shot himself dead center in the middle of the chest,” sheriff Bob Gualteri was quoted as saying at a press conference.

Shortly after a “loud popping sound,” Ahles’ mother had performed CPR and called 911, but the toddler was soon pronounced dead at the hospital.

Though officials said that the incident was a stark reminder for gun safety, the police stated that charges will not be filed on the parents.

“They took reasonable steps, and you can lawfully keep a gun in a vehicle in the glove box,” Gualtieri said.

“But I don’t think anybody can punish these parents any more than what they’ve been punished.”
