US jet slices horizon with 'sonic boom'

Video footage has shown a U.S. navy jet travelling faster than the speed of sound and creating a “sonic boom” in its wake.

Posted by British news outlet the Daily Mirror, the footage shows an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet jet fighter pass a U.S. aircraft carrier with an audience gathered on the deck.

Following the ship’s announcement informing everyone of the plane’s immediate incoming, the jet, also known as “Rhino,” shoots from the left with incredible speed through to the right. The jet’s speed ― 761 miles (1,224 kilometers) per hour ― is so fast that its sound is heard after the jet passes the ship’s middle section.

The footage shows a rare phenomenon of a sonic boom, which causes sound waves to compress and burst making an explosive sound. It also shows the sound waves hitting the ocean’s surface behind the jet.
